Here in a nutshell, is the Colin Montgomerie factfile running from June 23, 1963 when he was born, to June 18, 2006 when he finished in a tie  for second at the US Open

 1963: June 23 - Born in Glasgow.

1998: Wins European Order of Merit for a sixth time. Receives an MBE from the Queen in the November Honours List.

1999: Wins five European Tour events, including victory in his native Scotland for the first time by capturing the Loch Lomond Invitational. Also wins Cisco World Match Play championship at Wentworth. Voted the Asprey and Garrard Golfer of the Year for the fourth time in five years and sets a record for European earnings - £1,302,057. European number one for the seventh year in a row. Beats the late Payne Stewart on the last green at Brookline to maintain unbeaten record in five Ryder Cup singles. Although he wins three and a half points, he cannot save the European team from losing to the United States 14 13.

2000: Finishes 19th at the Masters, has a disastrous US Open - finishing 15 over par at Pebble Beach - ties for 26th at the Open at St Andrews and has a disappointing showing in the US PGA. Finishes sixth in the European Order of Merit.

Disqualified after signing for an incorrect score in the final round at the US PGA Championship in Atlanta.

Ends the season in fifth place on the Order of Merit.

2002: Misses the cut at the US Open in Bethpage, but gives himself every chance in The Open at Muirfield following a second-round seven-under-par 64 - his lowest ever in a major. However, he follows that with a disastrous 84 and goes on to finish in 82nd place. Misses the cut at the US PGA in Hazeltine and back problems force retirement after the first round of the World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational in Sahalee. Returns to form as he maintains unbeaten record in six Ryder Cup singles and is top points scorer in either side with four and a half out of five as Europe beat the US at the Belfry. Shares the season-ending Volvo Masters Andalucia at Valderrama with Bernhard Langer after two sudden-death play-off holes fail to separate them. Finishes fourth in the Order of Merit.

2003: Misses the cut in the Masters, finishes six-over-par at the US Open in Olympia Fields, withdraws from the Open at Royal St George's, four over par after seven holes, after injuring his hand and knees in a fall on the morning of the tournament.

April 24 - Announces he is to separate from his wife Eimear after 14 years.

June 28 - Won a 12-man play-off to qualify for the Open at Royal Troon, his home course, and maintain his record of playing in every Open championship since 1989.

July 5 - Montgomerie's world ranking appears to be in terminal decline as he hits a new low of 71.

July 18 - Finishes joint 25 at the Open after a final-round 76 drops him out of contention.

September 10 - Ex-wife granted 'quickie' divorce on grounds of 'unreasonable behaviour' three months earlier than expected.

September 20 - Sinks a four-foot putt on the 18th green to win the Ryder Cup, maintaining his unbeaten singles record in the competition, and finishing with three points.

2005: January - Awarded OBE in New Year's Honours.

March - Became embroiled in a placing row at the Indonesia Open when, on returning the day after play was halted for a thunderstorm, his ball was missing so drops another but not in the same place. He is cleared after a European Tour investigation but donates his £24,000 fourth-placed prize money to the Asian Tsunami Appeal after admitting he is "not comfortable" after seeing the incident on video.

June - After missing the Masters, finishes joint 42nd at the US Open, won by Michael Campbell

July 17 - Finishes second behind Tiger Woods at the Open at St Andrews.

August 12 - Misses cut at USPGA, won by Phil Mickelson

October 2 - Wins the Dunhill Links on his return to St Andrews and moves second in Order of Merit behind Campbell.
