US OPEN PROFILE |
 |
|
Retief Goosen came firmly under the category of event specialist after claiming a second US Open title at Shinnecock Hills in 2004. His unflappable approach on the final day saw him hold off a strong Phil Mickelson challenge on a course that brought many of the best players in the world to their knees. He came close to landing a third US Open in 2005 when he led by three shots going into the final round at Pinehurst No.2. Then, inexplicably, one of the game's coolest heads derailed in the final round and dropped 11 shots to finish 11th. He has hit back since, winning his first US PGA Tour event in 2004 at The International and finishing 5th and 6th respectively in the 135th Open and the US PGA Championships. Despite being top points scorer in the Presidents Cup with 4 ½ points, including a 2 and 1 singles win over Tiger Woods, he was unable to prevent the International Team going down to the USA. |
